About the museum

Strandingsmuseum St. George (the St George Shipwreck Museum) first opened in 1992 and, after a total renovation and transformation into a brand new museum, reopened in 2017.

The nucleus of the Museum consists of finds salvaged from the bottom of the sea in the late 1980s from the two English ships of the line, the HMS St George and HMS Defence, which were wrecked on the morning of Christmas Eve 1811 in a hurricane off Thorsminde.

The first museum was in the same location as the present one.

The new building was designed by the architects, Frank Maali and Gemma Lalanda from Copenhagen. Here they describe the job of building the Museum:

»For us as architects, it has been a fascinating challenge and an unforgettable experience to become so closely acquainted with such a rugged and marvellous place – a humble little town that becomes a giant when the forces of nature take hold. It surely isn’t a coincidence that the place is called Thorsminde!

The architecture ended up as a balance between two forces. The low sheds with the adjoining roofed areas come across like a billowing dark sea surrounding a bright building with a tower rising out of it.

It is a contrast that seeks to convey two conditions: being lost and being rescued. You can’t get a much greater contrast than that!«

The exhibition was designed by Event Communications of London, who have designed several world-class museums, including the Titanic Museum in Belfast.
